In 1965, on the 85th birthday of their honorary citizen Hans Purrmann, the city of Speyer inaugurated the “Hans-Purrmann-Award of the City of Speyer for the Fine Arts” (Advancement Award). This award is currently endowed with 6.000 Euro and was joined 2012 by the “Grand Hans-Purrmann-Award of the City of Speyer” , endowed with 20.000 Euro.

Since 2017 both prizes are donated by the Hans Purrmann Foundation. The compilation and organization of the jury for the “Grand Hans-Purrmann-Award of the City of Speyer” are responsibilities of the Foundation as well.

The conception of the awards is based on the self-image and the life dynamics of their name patron: passionate drive, high willingness to take risks, courage to experiment, openness, clarity, and strength of colour and form. All of those are outstanding characteristics, which shall be translated into present-day artworks of any media and genre.
